Volcano in Iceland 2021

The secret of The Bridge

Bárdarbunga, Katla, Eyjafjallajökull, Öræfajökull!  Do you know what connects all these peculiar names? They belong to volcanoes located Iceland that have caused fear in country in the past or more recently.

Iceland is a true paradise for nature and geology enthusiasts. The island lies at the juncture of two mighty tectonic plates: the Eurasian and North American plates, making it one of the most active volcanic regions in the world!
And, interestingly, you can witness this first hand. And it’s just a few kilometres from the airport.  The bridge between continents, as this place is called.  It’s one of the 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗲 tourist attractions in Iceland.

Although, in reality, its name is more impressive than its appearance. But with a bit of imagination, you can grasp the unique geographical location of Iceland and the powerful forces that tug at this small island in the middle of the ocean.

Eyjafjallajökull. Just spell it!

Over the past few centuries, Iceland has witnessed spectacular volcanic eruptions that have shaped its extraordinary landscape. Volcanoes in Iceland alongside glaciers are true symbols of the island.
And even though some of them have difficult-to-pronounce names, the famous Eyjafjallajökull, which erupted in 2010, was on everyone’s lips.

Remember that year? The eruption of Eyjafjallajökull caused a real air travel catastrophe in Europe. The volcanic ash cloud that rose into the air closed airports for several days and disrupted airline schedules. This is just one example of how unpredictable Icelandic volcanoes can be. And that eruption wasn’t even exceptionally large.

Fagradalsfjall. Calm down!

Volcanoes in Iceland are not only a threat but also a unique spectacle. We experienced this not so long ago, in 2021, and… just a few months ago.
On March 19, 2021, when the world was still trembling from the global pandemic, around 9:30 PM in Geldingadalur on the Reykjanes Peninsula, a volcano erupted.
To make it more interesting, in the preceding weeks, the area had experienced over 50,000 earthquakes!
Believe me, it was quite the ride. And although we expected a massive eruption after such an introduction, the Fagradalsfjall volcano calmly poured out lava for many weeks.
It was the first volcano I saw with my own eyes. And that was just two days after the eruption began.
The experience was incredible! A year later, for a short time, the volcano reminded us of its presence. And then it fell silent.
The latest eruption began this year on July 10th, almost a stone’s throw away from the previous volcano. The volcano was named Litli-Hrútur.
Scientists estimated this volcano to be more powerful than the previous one. However, the eruption was shorter in duration. The volcano is now inactive.

Katla, Please don't wake up!

Also..Did you know that Iceland has about 130 active and inactive volcanoes!? Recent eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula have been considered the beginning of a new volcanic era in Iceland.
The largest and most dangerous volcano on the island is hidden beneath the Katla glacier.
This volcano has erupted 20 times in the last millennium, and each time, it was massive. For many years, Katla has slept, but there is increasing talk that it may wake up soon. Who knows…

Something is coming

But that’s not the end.
A few weeks ago, more earthquakes started. This time bigger than the previous ones. First, the Blue Lagoon was threatened.

After a terrible night, when tourists simply fled the spa due to strong earthquakes, the Blue Lagoon was closed. But that was just a prelude.

The earthquakes were even greater and the lava moved to the town of Grindavik. The entire town of several thousand people was evacuated. People have not been able to return home for over a week. And we don’t know if they will come back.

Although the shaking has calmed down. This destruction is enormous. Collapsed streets, cracked houses, smoke rising from cracks in the middle of the city. The volcano is waiting. Nobody knows where he will appear.

But… Because we’re still waiting what happen… In meantime, you can read list Icelandic volcanoes HERE. This most famous ones.

By the way. Did you know that I created a sweater with a volcano motif? You can find photos here.

Yes. Here we go again!

On Monday, 18.12 started new eruption in Reykjanesbaer Peninsula. It’s specific.  It does not have the shape of a typical volcano with a cone, just a crack in the ground.

The first moments of the eruption were very spectacular. It looked like the sky was on fire. And the Internet was flooded with hundreds of photos that residents of the area took straight from their doorsteps, with a red sky and tongues of fire in the background.

Unfortunately, I was not in Iceland that day. I came back a day later. Only a few red dots were visible from the plane window. It started with a bang. But it quickly calmed down.

How long will it take and in which direction will the lava flow? No one knows this. Nearby Grindavík is at risk. A town of several thousand inhabitants, from which the inhabitants were evacuated a few weeks ago.

But also a power plant that supplies electricity and water to nearby Reykjanesbaer and the airport. Or will the lava cross the path to Reykjavik?

At this point, it’s all speculation. Predictions say this volcano won’t be spewing lava for long. And who knows? Maybe he will surprise us all yet.

Here I get some photo from my friend. She lives in Vogar. Much closer to this area than me.
