I have for you 15 ideas how to use an old sweater. I was recently looking at one of my old sweaters that I don’t wear anymore, and I thought it would be a shame to throw it away. After all, a sweater is also a material from which we can create something new. In the era of eco and no waste, it is tempting to give sweaters a second life. That’s why I thought and created 15 ideas how to use an old sweater. All you need is a little skill, a needle and thread, or a crochet hook. And get to work!
It’s not that hard to create something new from old things. But how much fun it is when you do something yourself.
Upcycle your old sweaters into soft, cozy cushions for your couch or bed. You can experiment with colors. Cut squares, triangles, sew and use as a pillow cover. I guarantee that it will be nice to cuddle up to such a pillow.
Once you have a pillow, it’s time to make… a blanket for it. Preferably in a similar style, or something completely different. Combine different pieces of woolen sweaters to create a unique blanket. This is a great way to use materials that are still in good condition but no longer wearable. Remember! It doesn’t have to be perfect.
You will create a practical and original shopping bag using pieces of sweaters as material. And how will you stand out!
Use the sleeves or other parts of sweaters to create practical gloves or a warm scarf. This is a great way to avoid wasting material and get new, original accessories.
If you have a lot of material, or excess clothes, a sponge or anything else, you can create woolen poufs or seat cushions. Create covers from sweaters and fill them with fabric. You can also sew a woolen cover onto an old and damaged pouffe.
It’s a great way to recycle and add coziness to your space.
Do you travel with a dog like me? A good idea is to make a rug from an old sweater and place it on the seat. Not only for the comfort of our pet, but also to protect against dirt. If you want, you can place the same mat on the front seats.
Turn old sweaters into elegant and comfortable covers or cushions for garden chairs. You will see that it will be much more pleasant to relax in the fresh air on handmade covers.
Create original stuffed animals or mascots for children using soft knitted fabrics from old sweaters. Or encourage your children to create clothes for toys from fabric fragments. I spent almost my entire childhood sewing clothes for dolls or knitting dresses for them.
Use soft and warm sweaters to create comfortable socks for walking around the house or shoe covers, perfect for cold days. When there is a lot of snow I always use tube socks. They are perfect. Nobody likes it when snow gets into their shoes.
Cut off the sleeves or part of the front of a regular sweater to create an elegant cover for your notebooks, calendars, books or guides that are unique to you. They will be even closer to your heart.
Use old sweaters to create an original cover for the bedside table. You can cut the sweaters into pieces and combine them into different patterns. I suggest making a circle out of them. Won’t it be nice?
Use the soft texture of the sweater to create a case for your books or tablet. Sew it into the shape of the device, or create an envelope out of the sweater, thread a string, or sew a button to the closure. Add decorations to give it a personal touch. And it’s done.
Pets can also enjoy seeing old sweaters come back to life! Make a padded bed for your cat or dog using fabric from an unwanted sweater. Or create a woolen mouse from a piece of sweater or another toy that will interest your pet.
Cut pieces of sweater and double sew them to create soft cupholders. They will not only be practical, but will add charm to your table. I guarantee you that tea tastes better with such handmade coasters.
Cut out pieces from colorful sweaters can become fantastic Christmas tree decorations. Maybe you have a sweater with a star pattern or Christmas trees? Wrap it around round Styrofoam and you create stylish baubles.
Add some sparkle to your Christmas tree!
I have lots of ideas for reusing a wool sweater. I’m sure you will find the perfect one for you. It’s definitely not worth throwing it away, because such a sweater often has its own history that is important to you.
You can also wash the entire sweater and use the wool for something completely new. Why not.
